Introduce

Deoksugung(Palace) Seokjojeon is the first interior
building that combines traditional and modern designs inside an old palace.

Modern architectural techniques and structures were used a lot. It is worth noting that a number of buildings were built for new purposes, like Jeonggwanheon (Pavilion) where King Gojong used to have coffee. Jeonggwanheon (Pavilion) designed by Russian architect Sabatin is a gallery from which you can see outside. The banister is decorated with traditional patterns, while the floor is laid with the tiles imported from Russia. The beginning of the modern times is also seen in the red-carpeted Deokhongjeon, where important guests were welcomed, the brick arch Yuhyeonmun, and the European-styled Seokjojeon.

The building was constructed as a part of modernization, suggested by Brown, the English financial advisor to King Gojong. The construction of the East Wing took 10 years from 1900. The basic design was done by an Englishman G.D. Harding, and the interior design by another Englishman Robell. It is a three-story stone building, with the first floor used as a lounge, the second floor as a greeting room and hall, and the third as the living place of royal family. It is worth noting that they followed the European palatial style of the 18th century Neoclassicism, with the upper part of the pillars decorated in the Ionic order and the interior in the Rococo style. The building has the lines of the West when seen from outside, but there are traditional elements such as traditional patterns on the outer pillars. The West Wing was built in 1937, now used as the art gallery, and a fountain and a western style garden were added.
